Communication skills are essential for the successful future career of a student. In today’s competitive world, communication skills in business are the most sought after quality of an educated person. Reading, writing and listening carefully are the three most important communication skills for students. These skills like most of the communication skills sounds too familiar as a result of which we take them for granted.
As regards reading and writing, the only thing that we need to tackle is to adapt with our growing age and concentration. With these two qualities, it is possible to develop reading, oral communication skills and writing skills.
Apart from reading and writing presentations, reports and speeches are a part of college curriculum. This has been implemented in our institution using Language Laboratory for the overall development of students. This makes expressive skills and managing skills also important for a student. It is also important to develop communication skills in relationships.
Introduction to Language Laboratory:
The language laboratory in Lourdes Matha College of Science and Technology, Trivandrum, is focused in developing Linguistics skills, more precisely, focused in improving knowledge in English dialect. The language laboratory of the institute is acting as a ‘technological break’ for imparting skills in English, that is primarily designed for enhancing student’s ability in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, which are quintessential, for an effective communication, that plays a vital role in professional careers ahead.
The language laboratory provides rich teaching material contents, that overrides traditional/conventional teaching methods, by providing an interactive learning environment, which has Interactive and progressive teaching modules from Elementary to Advanced levels.The language laboratoryof the institute is well designed and delivers a structured
eLearning environment that is successful, reliable, result oriented and efficient to enrich the English language learning process.
The new technologies present in classrooms facilitates a comprehensive- digitally connected environment for the student and offers the students more practice hours and up-to-date exercises than can be found in language books. Moreover, Language laboratoryallow students to reinforce material learned in class by putting them into practice through interactive activities. Besides that, the progress of each student is assessed, evaluated, and monitored.
A Digital Language Lab is a language learning solution with a specially equipped facility designed to train students in any language (usually one foreign to the mother tongue) using proven language teaching techniques.
The teacher delivers the methodology through an automated system that is adaptable to teaching a novice or a neophyte as well as brush-up the skills of a not-very-fluent speaker to not only speak it phonetically correct in a native accent but also learn it quickly and deliver it with clarity and confidence.
The software used in Language Laboratory is ETNL.

Thus, the language laboratory aims to engage students in overcoming the influence of native dialect, stumbling of words in between a conversation, enhancing pronunciation, correcting grammatical mistakes, ameliorate vocabulary, thus developing communication skills, to meet the global standards in English proficiency. Owing to its multiple features and usability, we strive and believe that the language laboratory can bring positive results in students who have limited exposure to English in their day-to-day life.
